Protecting the RAMSAR wetland of Bowling Green Bay
|
This project is for the implementation of a multiple stakeholder strategy to protect the Ramsar wetland of Bowling Green Bay. Over the next two years the project will focus on the control and ongoing management of weeds of national significance (WoNS) and pest animals threatening the ecological character of the wetland. Key components include: innovative weed control techniques and management arrangements for long term control; sustainability of management gains; and tangible improvements in the resilience of the targeted wetland ecosystems. There will be an emphasis on creating a buffer in the catchments (primarily Haughton River and Barratta Creek) that feed into and influence the Ramsar wetland. This will support ongoing weed control works being undertaken within the Ramsar wetland. Principal activities include: controlling WoNS; management agreements with landholders to implement ongoing control; fencing and revegetation as part of ongoing weed management activities and to enhance biodiversity; capacity building activities to engage communities and enhance skills and knowledge. A Steering Committee made up of representatives from local government, state government, academia, environmental consultants and Wetland Care Australia have identified priority areas in this are for works to be completed on ground. High Resolution imagery has been captured on Sheepstation Creek and around Palm Creek, St Margarets Creek and Healey's Lagoon.
