Coastal Plants of the Burdekin Dry Tropics has been co-produced by NQ Dry Tropics and Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare Group Incorporated, with cultural information provided by the Manbarra (Palm Island) Traditional Owner group.

The purpose of this book is two fold. Firstly it is to provide information about our delicate coastal plant environments and the cultural values associated with them. Secondly, but no less importantly, it is to encourage local coastal residents to use these beautiful native plants in their own backyard coastal environments. The plants included are examples of the native flora found in the Dry Tropics Catchments, spanning from Bowen in the south to Crystal Creek in the north.

An important way that we can significantly help our coastal areas is by planting local native species into our surrounding gardens instead of planting exotic species. This book is designed to help coastal residents do that by identifying local native plants suitable for their yard and lifestyle. All plants are local provenance and most of these can be easily grown in gardens (depending on size of gardens, soil types and other factors). The importance of planting natives in your garden and why our coastal ecosystems need your help is explained.

The beauty and unique features of each plant are described within this book. Also within this guide is important information at a glance, including what types of native fauna you can attract into your garden by planting particular plant species. By using the keys and the table, you will be able to find suitable plants for your yard and be on your way to creating a beautiful, native garden that will form an important part of the local coastal ecology. And don’t forget to have a look for these native plants next time you go for a walk on the beach – check out the Coastal Zones to see what the different zones are and which plants you might find there!
