Description

Reference: QLD210
Bioregion: Brigalow Belt North
Criteria for inclusion in Directory: 1,2,3
Catchment: Haughton, Lower Burdekin

Location

Three discrete alluvial fans on the western edge of the Burdekin-Townsville Coastal Aggregation (QLD005). The St Margaret's Creek fan is about 34 kilometres southeast of Townsville at 19 degrees 28' 16" S, 147 degrees 03' 28" E; the McKenzie Creek fan is about 31 kilometres south-east of Townsville at 19 degrees 26' 53" S, 147 degrees 02' 51" E and the Emmet's Creek fan is about 29 kilometres south-east of Townsville at 19 degrees 24' 56" S, 147 degrees 02' 35' E.

Significance

The site is a unique example of complex tall closed forest that has developed at a location that is climatically submarginal for closed forest development as a result of an unusual set of conditions. It is the largest and most complex of very few examples of lowland tall closed forest habitat between Townsville and Proserpine. The suite of birds utilising the site appears to be unique (i.e. similar patches of forest to the north and south are occupied by different groups of birds).
